Bush and Alpine Walks

We at the Anderson's Alpine Lodge sincerely trust you will enjoy the beauty that surrounds us on this side of the Mountain. Two notable features on this side just a few minutes drive up the road are walks which are entirely different in character but easy for most to accomplish. The Kamahi Walk from the Mountain House takes one into the heart of the forest but is only 15 minutes in duration. The other is the walk from the Plateau to the Manganui Gorge, where within 20 minutes one is fronted by the sheer majesty and boldness of this unique cone peak.

All tracks are carefully sign-posted but only local nature walks are colour coded for added peace of mind for newcomers to bush walking. Always allow for a weather change, particularly if venturing further up the mountain, and on the lower bush areas, keep to the well defined tracks.

KAMAHI WALK: A beatiful easy 15 minutes dominated by the Kamahi anhd a wonderful introduction to the Gobelin forest, mountain streams, ferns, Tui, Bellbirds and Native Pigeon.

PATEA WALK: A medium walk of 1 hour, starts just below the Mountain House. The abundant rains promote a forest of almost unbelieveable tropical richness. On this walk you will see this moss-laden mountain forest at it's best as you walk across the deeply dissected flanks of the Park's youngest volcano. Before crossing the road about half way on the walk, take time and return about 100 metres, stand quietly and soak in the incredible moss draped fuchsias.

ENCHANTED WALK: Round trip of about 2-3 hours. Best to leave the Mountain House and walk up the road to the Plateau, enter the Round the Mountain track on the South side of the Plteau and after 5 minutes turn down the Enchanted Walk. The walk drops about 300 metres and at first has spectacular views of the mountain terrain below, East Taranaki plane in the middle distance and on a clear day Tongariro mountains on the horizon. This walk provides an excellent opportunity to observe how with altitude, the sub alpine shrub gradually changes into forest. Has quite a steep gradient with lots of steps.

CURTIS FALLS: About three hours return, this track crosses over several streams and rivers radiating from the mountain's drenched cone and is a walk considered hard with knife-edged ridges and deep gorges. This walk goes across the grain of this rugged land and descends into the Manganui river where the two Curtis Falls plunge over ancient lava flows; the second falls is reached by climbing up a rock face on the left side of the first fall, then continue along easy ground through the riverbed for about 200 metres. Especially beautiful in the spring time when all the clematus flower and ellegantly drape of the big cliffs on each side of the majestic Manganui River bed.
MANGANUI GORGE: Drive to the Plateau, walk through the gate, then up the emergency access road toward the Manganui ski field. At the flying fox, spectacular views of the Manganui Gorge and the main peak is gained after only 15 to 20 minutes from the car. One may then proceed around the gorge , but take notice of the warning signs; no loitering in the gorge area. Once at the ski field, one can walk up to the top tow shed and get beautiful views of the Taranaki planes. This track is accessable all year around, but good footwear and warm clothing is essential during the colder months.

DAWSON FALLS:  This roundtrip takes 4 to 5 hours from the Mountain House. It is a popular family tramp and starts just below the Mountain House along the Waingongoro Track over a spectacular swing bridge. Carry on to the Dawson Falls Display Centre. As an extra you can take the Konini Walk which brings you down to the beautiful Dawson Falls and back again to the Display Centre. Head up to Wilki Pools where you can scramble up on the rocks to the top of the Pools. Back again into the upper Round the Mountain Track, past the elegantly draping down Waingongoro Falls back to the Plateau. Follow down the road to the Patea track which will bring you home to the Mountain House.

TAHURANGI LODGE: 3 hours round trip starting from the Plateau up to the ski field. Past the skie field walk northwards on the Round the Mountain track to Tahurangi Lodge on the North side of the mountain. You will return the same way. It will reward you with beautiful views of North Taranaki and the sea coast. This tramp is rewarding in the summer months with many alpine flowers starting of with the Mount Egmont Buttercup and finishing later in the season with an abundance of leather leaf flowers. You will many pass aromatic herb and moss fields. Not recommendet for the inexperienced during winter and whatever the season, be concious of weather changes.
